Crayola Light Designer

Review of the Crayola Light designer

Creativity With Crayola Light Designer

Many parents , like me, remember when we would enjoy drawing on paper, coloring pictures in coloring books and if painting with water-colors. And as I recall, it was a great time. And all of these are still more than good enough for my children. And they will continue to express their creativity using these 'old-school' methods.

But after purchasing the Crayola Light Designer for my youngest son for his birthday, I have to admit that using technologically advanced art...supplies?...is also a great way to show imagination and expand creativity even more.

I definitely think that younger children should be exposed to simpler methods, and the Crayola Color Designer  (and other products similar to it) should be saved for the children that have experienced basic, more foundation like drawing tools -such as PAPER and real crayons.

Product Features

  • Drawings magically light up on a 3 dimensional surface
  • Drawings are created from light
  • Create with colorful lights
  • Amazing effects
  • No mess and no clean-up

Here is what I thought of Crayolas new art toy:

Crayola Light Designer Review

The light designer is basically a globe that runs on 4 dd batteries - and 2 aaa batteries for the pen itself. Once turned on you will notice options for more than just drawing. There are games for your children to play as well, along with options for creating drawings that can be set into motion.

I really like the added games , as it promotes additional creativity and stimulates broader thinking too. (Not to mention, kids seem to get board fairly quick these days, and we really want them to enjoy the things we give them longer).

Something that gave me hesitation and made me re-evaluate the age range for this product was the fact that you have to keep a yellow button pressed in on the stylus while you draw - which might be tougher for younger children. My son has handled this with ease, but he is 7 and is quite efficient with his motor skills.

Crayola Light Designer Reviews

Setting pictures in motion with the Crayola Color Designer is actually very easy - by pressing a button on the pen, your child can take their ideas to another level- and I even found myself somewhat eager to try out. You can also change colors with the pen as well. And while the ease of use is perfect for young ones, there are only 8 colors to choose from. Which is more than o.k. , and understandable for something this new - but it is also something that will have to be expanded on in the future.

Being an electronic drawing device not only provides multiple options , like games and drawings in motion, but it also allows kids to SAVE up to 50 drawings in the memory bank. Easily done , this lets your child constantly go back and improve favorite drawings over time. Another idea that lets them expand ideas further.

There is definitely a buzzing or humming noise that is noticeable with the Crayola Light Designer. Personally, its not a problem for me when my son plays in the kitchen or living room - BUT, my wife seems to think it should be played with in the bedroom - and so it will be staying there. ;)

Overall, I really like what this toy has to offer. I do think its worth the steeper price of around $60...but I also think that there is room for improvements and lower pricing in the future.
